For the sixth time in the last seven years, John Smith's was voted Academic & Professional Chain Bookseller of the Year at the awards dinner during the recent Academic, Professional & Specialist Booksellers Group Conference in Warwick.
This award is voted for by senior managers and sales representatives of all the main UK academic publishing companies and recognises the business which has consistently delivered in terms of operational performance, innovation and strategic development.
John Smith's also won the competition for Bookshop of the Year, with the University of Glasgow branch receiving this accolade, whilst the campus bookshop at the University of Stirling and the Hammicks legal flagship on Fleet St both also featured in the Top 5 shops in this category.
In addition, Gillian Isbell and Irfan Jalil (from the company's UEL Stratford and Aston University branches respectively) were both named among the Top 5 Individual Booksellers of the Year.
Peter Gray, Chairman and CEO of the JS Group, commented:
"It is fantastic for John Smith's to be recognised once again as the most progressive and successful academic bookselling chain in the UK. Winning the title of Academic & Professional Chain Bookseller of the Year is testament to the hard work and dedication of our individual shop teams as well as the overall dynamic of our business.
It was also a real pleasure to see our Scottish flagship business at the University of Glasgow win the Bookshop of the Year crown for 2012, as well as 2 of our staff members receiving individual recognition.
As a company, the JS Group is addressing the changes and challenges in the current HE market by working to improve our core competencies, whilst at the same time developing innovative and tailored solutions to meet the needs of individual institutions - for example, in the form of our Aspire bursary management solution (www.aspire-he.co.uk).
The ongoing support of our key publishing partners is essential to the journey we are on and their recognition of our continuing success at these awards is obviously very satisfying, but - more importantly - it also reaffirms our belief that we are doing the right things to deliver sustained and sustainable growth."
